Finding A Niche Market

If you are new to Internet Marketing and have been tasked with finding a niche market to promote then the following information will make that task a lot easier.

If you are just starting out the whole Internet marketing thing can become a little overwhelming. Finding a niche or niche market is one big hurdle to put behind you. Because I write for people that are primarily new to the marketing industry I will give you a quick explanation of what a niche market is!

A niche market or a niche is a group of people looking for a product or a service, sounds simple! That was the easy part, now you need to know how to find a niche market out of an ocean of products and services that you can promote.

Where Do I Startstart line

First place to start looking is in areas of interest.  Niche markets are as broad as your imagination. if it exists then chances are someone is looking for it. What you want to do is start searching close to home. Do you have any personal interests or hobbies? Are you an expert or knowledgeable in a certain discipline? Are you good at home renovations, sports, automotive repairs, do you like travel? The key is to try and pick a niche market that you are passionate about or take a personal interest in. It will be a lot easier to promote if you are personally interested in a  product or service.

What If I Have No Interests

Don’t  despair! If your having trouble finding a niche that  you have a personal interest in all is not lost.  Even if you did have a niche market that you were interested in this is no guarantee that it would be a suitable candidate.

Drilling Down On A Niche Market

drill down smallWhat I do when I am faced with finding a niche that I can promote with little background knowledge is start searching for a niche  in a broad sense.  I call this process drilling down on a niche market. First I  look at large categories and search for ideas.

Here is how I do it.  First I compile a list of broad terms such as ” how to do home renovations”. This category on it’s own is a hard niche to get your website ranked in do to the fact there is a ton of competition and it is very broad. I would then break this broad niche down into specialty sub sections, drywalling, electrical, plumbing, flooring, the list goes on and on. Now I have gone from a very general niche market to more specific niches.

The sub categories that I have just listed are still to broad. You can find this out by either using a key word tool, my favorite key word tool is JAAXY, or you can simply do a search in Google and see how many search results turn up. Take flooring for example ,

I punched into flooring into Jaaxy,  and the results came back showing monthly searches of 808345 people punched in the topic flooring, 137419 people followed through and researched flooring. The most important number 54900000 is the competition score which you can see is insanely high, ( high is not good). Look at the difference when you start to break flooring into smaller niche markets. Bamboo flooring gets a ton of traffic with very little competition. You could keep breaking these categories down and down and never know what Jewell you may find.

One More Detail

Now that you have narrowed down your options  and you have established that there could be a niche market to promote you need to determine if there are opportunities to market such a product.

This is where I would now start surfing the net punching in brands, retailers, wholesalers of our drilled down niche products. If I find a company that has an affiliate program and offers what I would consider commissions worthy of my efforts I am off and running.

Companies that  may qualify could be big box stores such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Rona, the list goes on. Sometimes the smallest retailers or manufacturers will surprise you with great incentives!

The flooring category  is just one example I drilled down on in 5 minutes. Take your time,  do your homework and find the niche market that is right for you. There you have it,  a quick over view of finding a niche market.
